As tread wears, that capacity shrinks fast. 2. Water depth
It takes surprisingly little โ hydroplaning can begin in water as shallow as a tenth of an inch when speed is high enough and tread is low. - Replace tires at 4/32" โ not the legal limitIn a climate with 100+ rain days a year, wet performance is the spec that matters. Do the quarter test monthly: quarter upside-down in the groove โ if you can see the top of Washington's head, it's time. Check multiple grooves, since uneven wear can leave one shoulder bald while the center looks fine.
- Check pressure monthlySet tires to the PSI on your door-jamb sticker, checked cold. Proper inflation keeps the tread profile flat so the grooves can do their job in the wet.

If You Start to Hydroplane Anyway
Even careful drivers hit an invisible sheet of water sometimes. The recovery is counterintuitive because the right move is to do less:
- Ease off the gas smoothly. Don't stab the brakes. As the car slows, the tires settle back through the water layer and grip returns โ usually within a second or two.
- Keep the wheel pointed where you want to go. Avoid big corrections. If the rear steps out, steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to travel.
- If you must brake: with ABS, apply steady firm pressure and let it pulse. Without ABS, brake gently to avoid locking the wheels.
